I'm Tim Roosen, a 39 year old metalsculpting artist, gallery owner and blacksmith from Sint-Truiden, Belgium. My artwork is mainly 'Dark Figurative', but I recently started with a new line of playful, colourful little robot sculptures. What started as an experiment quickly got out of control and turned into the ever expanding 'Roboville'-universe.
How did your interest in robots / robotics
I grew up watching Sci-Fi movies and series on TV, such as Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers. And even though Twiki was actually a bit of an annoying little git, I can say that's where my fascination with robots started. When creating my figurative sculptures, I always tried to give them that illusion of being part organic and part machine. And then I created 'Fred'. He should have been called Adam, since he was the first, but I figured I might get in trouble with copyright and such. Fred was a bright red, little steel robot with stainless steel arms and legs and a big brass nose, an old volt-meter in his belly and an antenna on his back. He wasn't like anything I'd made before. I showed him at an exhibition in Luxemburg, where he was promptly adopted by a young couple. So then I started building his brothers and sisters and the rest, as they say, is history.
What kind of actions needs to be done in the community
to increase the interest and the awareness of robots /
Robots come in many different shapes and sizes and the possibilities in their use are pretty much endless. However, people can't always tell they are in fact robots and even more often, when they do, people are a bit scared because they see the machines taking over jobs previously done by humans. I think we especially need to focus on the benefits of robotics, for instance in the medical sector, to create an acceptance and bigger understanding of robots in our world.
If you have any closing remarks or comments about robots
/ robotics, then go ahead.
I look forward to working together with Vive Les Robots. We have a couple of exciting things planned for the near future, so watch this space!
