My name is Fran Castillo. I'm an architect and an interaction designer. Currently I'm researching in 'Responsive Environments'. Here I'm exploring 'Interactive Environments' and 'Autoadaptive Architecture'. These explorations are based in robotics and simulation models. The research articulates the design of evolutionary architectures through an actuation system ('System Embedded Intelligence') and a new evolutionary material system. The system proposes the architecture like an open and living system which is evolved through an environmental dynamic feedback and also investigates 'Affective Computing'. The Responsive Environments research is also investigating data visualization system or simulation models like a framework in which we can explore models and visualize the dynamic behavior of complex systems.
How did your interest in robots / robotics start?
My interest in robotics started by that this research questioning the implications of robotics in architecture, and thoughts about that if the architecture could respond and evolve the dynamic patterns of users and environmental parameters. This was inspired by the idea of a dynamic and an adaptive architecture. We understood that it could optimize domestic functions through system embedded intelligence. We also explored and formulated new evolutive interfaces and visualizations, which ultimately investigate new ways of a home computation. All these concerns are continually present in the beginning of the research.
What kind of actions needs to be done in the community to increase the interest and the awareness of robots / robotics?
I think now a days robotics is really remarkable. The importance of robotics in the society is shifting paradigms. In addition to this, it's important to improve the educational robotics in the society, through exhibitions, courses and public events about the implications of robotics.

To finalize, I would like to understand robotics like a framework in which I can explore (and simulate) the complexity of living systems. This theoretical framework will generate new ways of understanding and implement the design of future scenarios.
